Kern’s paintings are an accumulated history of their own making. The paintings are worked up in many layers, beginning with the initial scenario under investigation, setting the scene. With each progressive layer the cubes’ evolution, their growth, colour, position and movement in space as well as their realtionship towards each other is traced, the positions at which they arrive are tested and pushed towards a point at which the image can rest. This stage is documented before the painting process continues. Pentimenti and animated films show the different stages of one painting’s transformation and are a way for the viewer to share in the painting’s evolution.

Die malerischen Konzeptionen, die den Unterbau für die entsprechenden Bilder abgeben sollten, mußten von mir zunächst erst ausgearbeitet werden. Auf der Basis relativ wahllos erzeugter, spontaner Bildvariationen entwickelten sich langsam aktive Tendenzen, die bestätigt oder widerlegt, bewahrt oder vernichtet sein wollten. Auf diese Weise ließen sich eine Menge Schemata ausarbeiten, die durcheinandergemischt, abgeändert und ausprobiert werden konnten, bis sich erfolgversprechende Bildsequenzen herauskristallisierten. Sehr bemerkenswert fand ich auch meine Erfahrung, daß sich nahezu von jedem bildnerischen Ausgangspunkt aus eine genügend eigenartige Bildkonstellation finden ließ, die zumindest temporär der Feststellung wert war. >>

In painting, usually actual colors have to be applied to rectangular surfaces side by side or one layer over the other. The picture’s meanings depend on the method and technique into which this is done. Nothing else. The knowledge about this symbolizes a wide range of mind’s ability. My artistic interest now can be put as this: “How does painting work?”

The German Duden(4) of 1983 defines iteration in mathematics as “a step-by-step method of calculation to achieve an ever closer approximation of the exact result.” I use the term iteration to mean the built-up of image formations which progress into ever more complex units by a continuous feed-back with previous formations and by constantly re-absorbing and re-including all that was before.
