“The Diversity of the Painted Cube”, Christoph Kern’s first solo exhibition at TitaniumTitanium Yiayiannos Gallery, AthensJune 30 - July 25, 2008Opening: Monday, June 30th, 8 p.m.
Nikola Irmer wrote in her Introduction about Kern’s work:
Kern’s paintings are an accumulated history of their own making. The paintings are worked up in many layers, beginning with the initial scenario under investigation, setting the scene. With each progressive layer the cubes’ evolution, their growth, colour, position and movement in space as well as their realtionship towards each other is traced, the positions at which they arrive are tested and pushed towards a point at which the image can rest. This stage is documented before the painting process continues. Pentimenti and animated films show the different stages of one painting’s transformation and are a way for the viewer to share in the painting’s evolution.
A genetic algorithm (abbreviated as GA) is a search technique used in computer science to approximate solutions to optimization and search problems. Genetic algorithms are categorized as global search heuristics which classify them as an incomplete search. Genetic algorithms are a particular class of evolutionary algorithms that use techniques inspired by evolutionary biology such as inheritance, mutation, selection, and crossover (also called recombination).
First I had to work out the concepts for the paintings. On the basis of rather accidentally produced and spontaneous image variations gradually active tendencies developed which needed affirmation or denial and waited to be kept or destroyed. In this way I devised an abundance of schemes which could be mixed together, changed and tested until promising image sequences developed from them. I found it very remarkable that almost any composition could come to a sufficiently peculiar image constellation to be at least temporarily considered. >>
In painting, usually actual colors have to be applied to rectangular surfaces side by side or one layer over the other. The picture’s meanings depend on the method and technique into which this is done. Nothing else. The knowledge about this symbolizes a wide range of mind’s ability. My artistic interest now can be put as this: “How does painting work?”
